UPDATE: Facebook viral video making the rounds in Connecticut

facebook-logoUPDATED: Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen is warning parents and Facebook users across Connecticut about a viral video on Facebook that appears to be video link sent by a friend, but when it’s clicked on, it turns out to be child pornography.

WFSB TV reported on Monday the video is showing up in Farmington and New Britain, and warnings about it are reportedly being sent to parents in those towns as well as in Avon, Simsbury, Rocky Hill, and Hartford.

The Region 9 superintendent in neighboring Redding and Easton is also sending a warning today to parents.

“My office has been in contact with Facebook about this video and the local reports that it has surfaced in Connecticut,” Mr. Jepsen said in a release issued Tuesday. “Facebook has been very responsive to our requests for information and is working directly with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on this matter. The FBI has been aware of this particular video since 2005 and is seeking information on the unknown suspect. Anyone with information can contact an FBI investigator by email at RescueMe@ic.fbi.gov.”

The attorney general said that “contrary to some reports, the video is not a virus, but is being spread through views and shares” on Facebook.

Mr. Jepsen recommends not clicking on, viewing, sharing, or liking any suspicious link in a Facebook newsfeed or timeline — instead, delete it and report it immediately to Facebook.
