The League of Women Voters of Weston will hold its annual Speak Up on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10:30 to noon at the Weston Public Library. A member of the league for 14 years, Laura Smits will moderate the forum.
Ms. Smits moved to Weston in 1999 and quickly became active in town politics as a member of the Board of Education (2001-05) and as the Democratic candidate for first selectman (2003). She has served as the elected Democratic registrar of voters since 2008.
In addition, Ms. Smits moderates “Current Events Mondays” at the Weston Senior Activities Center, and she is completing her master’s thesis in English literature at Southern Connecticut State University.
Ms. Smits serves on the Democratic Town Committee and on the Weston Commission on Aging.
Speak Up offers Westonites a chance to talk with and ask questions of their elected and appointed representatives about issues of importance to the entire community.
Among the many community leaders who will be present are members of the three major boards in Weston — the Board of Finance, the Board of Education, and the Board of Selectmen — as well as members of the various commissions in town, the superintendent of Weston public schools, members of the Connecticut legislature representing Weston, and a number of other town leaders.
