A busy day was also a productive one for the Weston High wrestling team at the Staples Duals.
The Trojans took on four opponents last Saturday, Jan. 26. By the time the day was done they had three victories, coming against Fairfield Prep (39-28), Staples (57-24) and Masuk. Their only loss was to Norwalk (41-31).
Several Weston wrestlers brought home multiple wins in their respective weight classes. Tim Levene went 4-0 at 120 pounds, winning a 9-6 decision over Fairfield Prep’s Matt Freed and pinning Staples’ Matt Prior in four minutes, 40 seconds. He also had forfeit wins over Masuk and Norwalk.
Also going undefeated, Geronimo Valin won a 6-0 decision over Fairfield Prep’s Dave Maloof and posted a 4-0 score against Norwalk’s Jim McInerney. He also had two quick pins, one coming over Staples’ Joe Tuccinardi in 18 seconds and another in 13 seconds over Masuk’s John McFadden.
Most of the competition had a hard time filling the 195-pound class. As a result, Blake Wertleib got three wins by forfeit. He also pinned Fairfield Prep’s John Alexis Montaud in 5:27.
Alex Ishin was at 220 pounds for three of the matches and got three forfeits against Fairfield Prep, Masuk and Norwalk. He also competed at 285 pounds in the Staples match and won that one by forfeit as well.
Travis Delaney was also at 285 and got forfeits over Fairfield Prep and Masuk. He lost a 7-2 decision to Norwalk’s Brian Garcia and wrestled at 220 in the Staples match, losing by a pin in 7:59 in double overtime to Dan Kogstad.
Competing in the 138-pound class, Remy Babson-Smith won three matches, including a pin over Fairfield Prep’s John Bosken in 1:57. He shut out Staples’ Alex Brown 9-0 and pinned Masuk’s Anthony Amoroso in 30 seconds but lost a 16-0 decision to Norwalk’s Evan Reich.
Outscoring Fairfield Prep’s Rob Fumai 7-1, Ryan O’Connell later got the wins by forfeit against Staples and Masuk. His lone loss was to Norwalk’s Nary Ceson, coming by a pin in 5:01.
Finishing with an even record, Josh Lachs pinned Fairfield Prep’s Andre Talavera in 2:54 and did likewise to Staples’ Matt Collins in 5:20. He was pinned by Masuk’s Anthony in 4:50 McConnell and lost a close 6-5 decision to Norwalk’s Carlos Leon.
Also getting wins were Andre Leonard at 106 pounds and Rich Prackup at 113 pounds by forfeit in the Staples match. Mike Levene won a 9-0 decision over Norwalk’s John Koletsos.
Weston, now 7-8 overall, visits Immaculate-Joel Barlow on Wednesday at Barlow at 6 p.m. in the last meet of the regular season.
