Next Wednesday is the Fourth of July — Independence Day. It is so important to remember when celebrating a day off, the start of summer, gatherings with families and friends, the spectacle of fire in the sky, that what we are really celebrating is independence and the birth of the greatest country the world has ever known.
Independence is why we are able to celebrate, rejoice and revel in whatever way we see fit — with loud fireworks or quiet get-togethers. It’s why we can complain about our leaders, our taxes, our jobs (or lack thereof), and any number of other things that irk us without fear of reprisal. It’s why we can praise those we think are praiseworthy, why we can advocate for any position about which we feel passionately.
We have independence. We have freedom. Our country guarantees these as our inalienable rights. We should never take these things for granted.
Gather with friends and neighbors behind Weston Middle School this Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, share some food, listen to good music, watch a spectacular fireworks show, and give thanks for the invaluable gift of independence we have been given.
