A celebration of the life of Tony Award-winning producer and noted director Burry Fredrik (1925-2012) will be hosted by the Westport Country Playhouse on Sunday, July 1, at 3 p.m.
The tribute will be in the Lucille Lortel White Barn Center’s Sheffer Rehearsal Studio, 25 Powers Court, Westport. A reception will follow.
Ms. Fredrik, formerly of Weston, won a Tony award for co-producing Tom Stoppard’s Travesties, and led an active theatrical career spanning more than five decades.
At a time when women rarely held such positions, she made her Broadway debut in 1950 stage managing The Relapse, which had transferred from the Brattle Theatre in Boston.
As production stage manager, she would go on to such notable productions as the world premiere of Inherit the Wind, and Jerry Herman’s first book musical Milk and Honey.
Ms. Fredrik received her first Tony Award nomination for co-producing the revival of George Bernard Shaw’s Too True to Be Good,
Other landmark productions included the 1975 revival of The Royal Family, and Off-Broadway, Sam Shepard’s Buried Child, which won the Pulitzer Prize.
As a director, Ms. Fredrik made her Broadway debut with the short-lived musical Wild and Wonderful. She would go on to garner praise as a director in prominent regional productions at the Westport Country Playhouse and other theaters.
For a time, Ms. Fredrik was the associate artistic director for the Boston Post Road Stage Company. She was also an active member of the Theatre Artists Workshop in Westport, serving on its executive board and directing several workshops and readings of new works.
She served on the boards of both Westport Country Playhouse and Long Wharf Theatre, and established the Burry Fredrik Foundation, Inc., a charitable corporation, with a mission to aid in the growth and health of theatre companies, primarily in Fairfield County.
In a typical display of her altruism, Ms. Fredrik donated her body to science at Yale University. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the animal charity of choice, or contributions may be made to the Burry Fredrik Foundation, Inc., c/o Day & Levy, LLC, 1 Morningside Drive North, Westport, CT 06880.
