Region sets legislative priorities

Metro North

Weston First Selectman Gayle Weinstein has been named as the co-chairman of the Legislative Policy Committee, a joint committee of the South Western Regional Planning Agency (SWRPA) and the South Western Metropolitan Planning Organization (SWRMPO).

As such, Ms. Weinstein will help guide SWRPA’s and SWRMPO’s legislative initiatives for 2013.

The regional planning agency is made up of eight towns in the south west region: Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Wilton, Norwalk, Weston and Westport.

The MPO is composed of the chief elected officials of the SWRPA towns.

“We were very successful last year” in getting state legislators to eliminate treble damages for local zoning enforcement officers, Ms. Weinstein said.

SWRPA and SWRMPO have four main legislative objectives  for 2013:

• Obtain a $34 million bonding appropriation for implementation of improvements to MetroNorth’s New Canaan branch line.

• Maintain sustainable funding for existing levels of bus service in the region.

• Create an allocated pool of funds to speed the local bridge repair process.

• Simplify and incentivize affordable housing requirements.

SWRMPO is scheduled to meet today, Thursday, Jan. 24, to discuss these priorities, as well as emergency management and storm response, and a flooding study.
