Robert Stirling dies at 79

Robert Raine Stirling of Redding died Jan. 11, 2013, at his home. He was 79.

Born April 7, 1933, he was the son of Robert Henderson Stirling and Erminie Ina Raine Stirling.

A member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1955, Mr. Stirling interrupted his studies to join the Marine Corps, where he was a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and he served in Korea. He returned to Dartmouth and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in business administration and went on to receive an master’s degree Cum Laude from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 1958.

Mr. Stirling worked for IBM for 30 years, including assignments in Paris and Tokyo. In 1989 he joined Drake Beam Morin, an outplacement services company, as senior vice president and managing director of the Hartford office. He retired in 1996 and joined the Board of Directors of STRIVE Fairfield, County, Inc., a non-profit job training organization.

While working with IBM, Bob traveled extensively. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating, reading, good food and wine.

Mr. Stirling is survived by his wife, Rita Judd Stirling; his children and their spouses: Marjorie and Tim Godfrey, Sharon and Stephen Cadden, Susan and Mike Antonovich of Weston, Scott and Eileen Stirling, and Jeff Stirling; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth and Jenna Godfrey, Christopher Cadden, Michael and Katie Antonovich, Tyler, Cory and Haley Stirling; his sister Joyce Ann Wyatt; and several nephews and a grand-nephew.

A celebration of life serviice will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, 165 South Ave. in New Canaan. The Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home in Fairfield (shaughnesseybanks.com) is in charge of arrangements.
