A depleted lineup put the Weston High boys varsity basketball team in a tough spot when it hosted Bethel last week.
The Trojans were without captain Troy Flynn, who will be sidelined for three or four weeks due to a bone bruise in his leg. Fellow captain Charlie DiPasquale was also out with an injured ankle.
Their absence was keenly felt as the Trojans struggled in a 52-36 loss to the undefeated Wildcats on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
“We just came out flat,” said Weston head coach Mike Hvizdo. “We struggled a bit.”
Without Flynn and Pasquale the Trojans were not as aggressive as usual on offense, as was reflected in the first quarter. After one frame the Trojans trailed 17-5.
The hosts improved offensively for the next frame and came within 10 points of the Wildcats by halftime (29-20). The gap did not get any bigger until the fourth quarter. By then the Wildcats outscored the Trojans 13-6 the rest of the way.
“Overall we played a good defensive game,” said Hvizdo. “We were not offensively aggressive.”
Asher Lee-Tyson led Weston with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Ethan Lee-Tyson scored seven (one three-pointer) and Grant Limone sank six.
Erik Dammen-Brower scored five and had a good defense game, holding Bethel high-scorer Dan Garvin to 10 points from the field.
Matt Folger scored four points and Matt Gurman added a free throw.
Friday’s game at New Fairfield was a rematch of the season-opener which Weston won by 18 points. It was a whole lot closer this time, not to mention a different outcome as the Rebels edged the visitors 47-46.
Although not fully recovered, DiPasquale was back in the lineup but Weston was without Pascal Arvoy, who also has an injured ankle. A first they again struggled offensively, trailing 25-17 at halftime.
Weston had a much better second half in what results in a back and forth affair. It took a 32-31 lead after three frames and it remained close the rest of the way.
Up 46-45 with six seconds left, the Trojans missed two free throws. The Rebels had time for one more shot and Anthony Cammarota sank a buzzer-beater to win it for the hosts.
Asher Lee-Tyson led Weston with 20 points, including three three-pointers. Ethan Lee-Tyson followed with eight and Dammen-Brower sank six.
DiPasquale scored five (one three-pointer) and Gurman added four. Limone sank one free throw but had a career-high 16 rebounds.
Weston visits Notre Dame on Friday, goes to New Milford on Monday and is at Bristol Central on Wednesday. All games start at 7 p.m.
