Stamford garbage man hit by car while picking up trash in Weston

A trash collector was injured when he was hit by a car while picking up trash on Lyons Plain Road.

According to police, on the morning of Monday, Dec. 24, Juan Mendez of Stamford was operating a Finocchio Brothers Sanitation truck northbound on Lyons Plain Road when he noticed some trash had fallen from the truck.

Mr. Mendez got out to pick up the trash when a car heading southbound, driven by Nicholas Poidevin, 24, of Blueberry Hill Road, struck him  with the car’s mirror as he drove by.

When police arrived, Mr. Mendez was lying in the driveway of 22 Lyons Plain Road. Weston EMS was contacted and Mr. Mendez was transported to Norwalk Hospital. Lyons Plain Road was closed for a short time following the accident.

No charges have been filed and the matter is under investigation.
