Weston Fire Dept. and EMS hold Open House this Saturday

The Weston Volunteer Fire Department and Weston Volunteer EMS are co-hosting the annual Open House and Safety Day event on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 to 1.

The event will be held at Fire Station One, located on Norfield Road.

There will be several demonstrations throughout the day, including automobile extrication, where firefighters cut up a car with the “jaws of life” tools.

There will be a smoke trailer that replicates the effects of smoke inside a residence, and a fire hose demonstration where children get to operate an actual, working fire-attack hose.

Additionally, fire and EMS apparatus will be lined up for walk-throughs and show-and-tell.

The departments will be serving refreshments and hot popcorn, and fire and EMS safety literature will be available, along with T-shirts for the kids and face painting.

“This is the time each year when we get to invite the townspeople and children to the station to show them how the fire and EMS services in town operate,” said fire Chief John Pokorny.  “Each Open House and Safety Day we get several hundred adults and children who attend, and we’re looking forward to a big turnout this year.”

The Weston Fire-EMS Open House and Safety Day event is held in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week campaign.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait — Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of a three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety.

NFPA is addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages:

  • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
  • Know the age of the smoke alarms at home.
  • To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm. The alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
