BREAKING NEWS: Former Weston school bus driver Scott DeiCas gets 12 year prison sentence

Scott DeiCas

SCOTT DEICAS

A former Weston school bus driver who threatened public officials, engaged police in a 12-hour standoff in 2010, and was found in possession of child pornography on his computer, was sentenced to a 12 year prison term.

Scott DeiCas, 50, of New Canaan, was sentenced this morning, Friday, Dec. 7, by Judge Bruce Hudock in Stamford Superior Court to 12 years in prison, suspended after five years, and given 20 years probation for possession of child pornography. He was also found guilty of two counts of harassment.

The sentence was part of a plea bargain agreement that contained numerous conditions in addition to prison and probation:

Mr. DeiCas must register as a sex offender for 10 years and get treatment and counseling as a sex offender. He must get mental health and substance abuse evaluation and treatment. He must also make restitution to various agencies: $2,500 to the New Canaan Police Department, $3,000 to the Weston Police Department, $2,500 to Fairfield Police as well as $500 for equipment to Fairfield Police, $2,000 to Greenwich Police, and $300 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Senior State’s Attorney Richard Colangelo asked the court to prevent Mr. DeiCas from ever having any future contact with Weston and New Canaan public officials. Judge Hudock agreed and took the request further, ordering Mr. DeiCas to never have contact with any government officials again, including police. “As far as I am concerned, the defendant has forfeited his rights to express himself to town and government officials. If you don’t like it you can withdraw from the plea agreement,” he told Mr. DeiCas and his attorney, Mickey Sherman.

Mr. DeiCas will get credit for the two years he has served in jail so far.

After the sentencing, Mr. Colangelo said, “The sentence imposed on Mr. DeiCas will punish him for what he did and will allow us to supervise him for the next 20 plus years.”

Mr. Sherman called the DeiCas matter a very strange case. “You can’t argue he [DeiCas] was insane but you can’t say it was a normal case. He clearly was not thinking clearly,” he said.

Mr. Sherman said he believed Mr. DeiCas was more clear headed since his incarceration, and had accepted responsibility. He said the crimes were never meant to hurt anyone.

Bizarre

The sentencing brings to close a bizarre case, which Weston Police Chief John Troxell called “wacky” when it first unfolded.

Described by officials as a “disgruntled employee,” Mr. DeiCas worked for First Student bus company as a driver for the Weston school district from 2007 to 2009. After complaints were made by Weston parents about erratic behavior, he was transferred to Stamford in 2009, where he was subsequently fired. At the time of his arrest, he was unemployed.

In July 2010, Mr. DeiCas left a threatening voice message for the Weston school district’s director of finance and operations who had him transferred to Stamford.

A message was also left on the school district’s website that said, “Get ready Zionist scum,” and contained a link to the website of a Colorado man nicknamed “Killdozer,” who in 2004 used an armored bulldozer to destroy government buildings before committing suicide. The message was traced to Mr. DeiCas’ home computer.

As police investigated, they found Mr. DeiCas had a series of YouTube postings and videos in which he rambled on about the environment, politics, and his hallucinogenic drug use — referring to himself as “the leader of the LSD revolution.”

In one YouTube post he wrote, “Kill the beast; I will start with Weston town government.”

On the night of July 30, 2010, New Canaan police attempted to serve an arrest warrant for the Weston charges on Mr. DeiCas at his home on Ponus Ridge, where he lived with his elderly mother, Wilma DeiCas. He barricaded himself in the house and refused to come out.

During a 12-hour standoff, New Canaan police officer Kevin Casey attempted to negotiate with Mr. DeiCas via YouTube postings to no avail.

The next morning, New Canaan’s Special Response Team deployed a “flashbang” noise and sound explosive device, and entered the DeiCas residence with a canine from the Greenwich Police Department. Mr. DeiCas did not resist arrest.

Charges

Weston police charged Mr. DeiCas with first degree harassment and third degree computer crimes for the threatening allegations.

New Canaan police charged him with 30 counts of second degree harassment, and five counts of second degree threatening for a series of e-mails he sent to New Canaan public officials. He was also charged with interfering with an officer, resisting arrest, first degree criminal mischief, use of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance — less than four ounces of marijuana.

In September 2010, after a forensics analysis of Mr. DeiCas’ computer uncovered more than 50 sexually explicit images of children, Weston police charged him with possession of child pornography.

In December 2010, Mr. DeiCas pleaded not guilty to all charges and was held on $125,000 bond for the Weston charges, $125,000 bond for the New Canaan charges, and $250,000 bond for the child pornography charges. He was held in police custody since the time of his arrest.
