Easton firefighter killed in storm

Hurricane Sandy delivered the worst-case scenario that forecasters predicted Monday night.

“We took a big hit over the last few days, and I want to thank the people of Connecticut for hanging in there,” Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said during his 8:30 a.m. briefing Tuesday.

Two deaths in Connecticut have been attributed to Hurricane Sandy, one a volunteer firefighter in Easton was killed when a tree fell on his truck Monday night.

“Our first responders put their lives on the line, and when one of them loses their life, we all feel the pain,” Malloy said.

Connecticut is now in the recovery stage of the disaster, with “thousands of units of housing” affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Malloy said there was “extraordinary” damage to subways in New York and PATH trains in New Jersey. Metro-North this morning is assessing the damage to rail lines in Connecticut.

Malloy canceled the noon briefing so he could tour damage around the state. He will hold another briefing this evening.

Malloy said there are 630,000 customers without power in Connecticut, but that today’s nice weather and the presence of more line crews than after Tropical Storm Irene last fall should expedite restoration.

“We’ve made clear to the utility companies that their job is to get that power back on as quickly as possible, and they understand that,” Malloy said.
