The first meeting of the Youth Leadership Council (YLC), a discussion group for high school students, will be held on Monday, Oct. 1 at the Weston Public Library. The YLC provides a monthly forum for Weston students to discuss the challenges they face in high school and to learn about the risks associated with alcohol and substance abuse.
Tim Walsh, an educator and recovery coach who has more than 20 years of experience working with young adults, adolescents, and their families, will be the new director and facilitator for the Youth Leadership Council, which is organized by the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) of Weston.
Mr. Walsh has served as executive director of the Mountainside Treatment Center, an addiction and alcohol recovery program as well as serving as the founder and director of its adventure-based counseling program.
He is also a consultant and former youth director for the New Canaan Congregational Church youth programs.
John McGeehan, the former director and facilitator of YLC who founded and led the discussion program since its inception, recommended Mr. Walsh for the position.
YLC is made up of Weston students in grades nine through 12. The group meets monthly, from October through May, on the first Monday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Room at the Weston Public Library.
As YLC members, students have the opportunity to serve as mentors to younger students, become peer leaders, and help with ADAP programs in the Weston schools and in the community.
The YLC student representatives to ADAP are Jo Gurman, Andrew Katz, Eli Carter, and Charlotte Harris.
On Nov. 5, ADAP will hold a mandatory parents’ meeting at the Weston Public Library at 6 p.m. Mr. Walsh will present his ideas and plans for the program and his expectations. Parents who have students who have already been part of YLC and those who have students joining the group for the first time are asked to attend the parents’ meeting this year. It will be held in the library’s Community Room before the YLC meeting.
Students who are interested in being part of the Youth Leadership Council are required to submit an application and membership fee.
