The Weston Democratic Town Committee (DTC) will be joining The Fairfield County Democrats to host a Democratic Senatorial debate between Congressman Christopher Murphy and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz on Wednesday, May 23, 7 p.m., at Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue.
Dr Gary Rose, chairman of the Department of Government and Politics at Sacred Heart University, will be the moderator.
Mr. Murphy, the endorsed candidate of the Connecticut Democratic Party for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Joseph Lieberman, is a three-term congressman. Ms. Bysiewicz was the secretary of the state from 1999 to 2011 and received sufficient votes at the state convention Saturday, May 12, to primary for the seat.
The primary is scheduled for Aug. 14.
Dr. Rose is the author of 10 books on political and government issues. His most recent book, Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District: History, Politics and the Maverick Tradition, regarding the 2010 Congressional election in the 4th District, will be available for purchase at the event.
“This will be the first debate for Congressman Murphy and Susan Bysiewicz after the Convention and I am eager to hear them discuss many topics, including the economy, health care, and foreign affairs as well as local issues. Dr. Rose will be an excellent moderator and brings a high level of expertise to the subject matter,” said Barbara Reynolds, chairman of the Weston DTC.
The debate is free and open to the public. Following the debate, refreshments will be served and people will have a chance to talk with the candidates and Dr. Rose.
