Women’s softball: No Mercy! advances in playoffs

Both teams put their fair share of runners on base but it was No Mercy! (sponsored by Camelot Real Estate) that took advantage of the opportunities and pulled out a 7-5 win over Peter’s Spirits at the Onion Barn Field in the first round of Weston women’s softball playoffs on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

It was also its fourth victory over Peter’s Spirits this season and first ever playoff win in the three-year history of the team.

In the top of the first inning, Peter’s Spirits grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Kelly Saltzgaber doubled to ignite Peter’s Spirits’ offense, before Heidi Keeney singled to drive her in.

The game’s last lead went to No Mercy! thanks to a first inning rally that featured three runs cross the plate on an RBI double by Allie DiMauro and a two-run single by Dionne Dunham. The lead was extended to 6-1 in the third  thanks to a home run by DiMauro.

Peter’s Spirits out-hit No Mercy! 18-14, but stranded six runners on base. No Mercy! held off Peter’s Spirits as the latter was unable to overcome its five-run third inning deficit.

Peter’s Spirits also scored on a steal of home by Heidi Keeney, an RBI single by Mary Asphar in the fifth inning, and an RBI single by Carrie Schotmueller in the seventh . Still, Peter’s Spirits could not erase the deficit.

DiMauro racked up four RBI on three hits for No Mercy!. She doubled in the first inning, homered in the third and singled in the sixth.

No Mercy! continues the playoffs this week, Another victory over Peter’s Spirits will secure it a spot in the championship on Thursday against 20-30-40-Something, which defeated the Weed Wackers 6-5 in playoff game last Tuesday.
