Weston Volunteer Fire Department offers storm tips

weston-snow-cancel-closed-cWith a weekend forecast that includes bitterly cold temperatures, strong winds and more snow, the Weston Volunteer Fire Department wants Weston residents to be ready. Here are some helpful tips:

- If you are running low on oil, please contact your oil company today for a delivery.

- Consider turning your heat up a bit higher than normal. With frigid weather predicted, it may be wiser in the short term to keep your house warmer than usual for your own comfort and so that the pipes don’t freeze.

- In the unlikely event you do lose power, contact your utility company. For Eversource (formerly CL&P) call 1-800-286-2000.

- Use caution when using portable electric heaters.

- Use only a space heater that has been tested to the latest safety standards and have been certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

- Keep heaters at least three feet away from bedding, drapes, furniture, and other flammable materials.

- Always follow manufacturer’s directions for proper use, and please keep children and pets away from space heaters.

- Place the heater on a level, hard, nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor, and remember to turn the heater off if you leave the area.

-Never power the heater with from a power strip, and do not run power cords under rugs or carpeting.

- Never leave a space heater on when you go to sleep or leave your residence.

- Remember to check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure they are working properly.

- The department also urges all to be vigilant when using fireplaces and woodstoves and to properly dispose of ashes.
