The cotton candy! Winning at Whac-o-Mole! Being with my best friend. Witnessing the community come together. My sister’s face turning white on Ripcord! Those were some favorite moments expressed about the Memorial Day Fair in years past.
For the littlest ones, another fair fave is the ever popular carousel, returning as a ride this year. The younger set also can’t wait to get lost in the Fun House, race their friends on the slide and collide on the bumper cars.
Older kids report they like Zero Gravity, the new Rock-O-Plane and hanging with their friends.
For fair food lovers, the Kiwanis Club of Weston will serve its classic grilled favorites and treats, and new this year, the fair bake sale will offer pies and full trays of home made brownies, chocolate chip bars and rice krispie treats for people to bring to barbecues and picnics as they celebrate Memorial Day.
Dawn Egan, who has run and helped organize the fair for eight years, is sentimental about the fair.
“My favorite moment as a fair organizer is watching the interaction and excitement of the middle school aged kids as they finesse their way into asking each other to go on rides. I have watched them huddle in their friend groups, break out of them and find the courage to ask. I have seen so many wonderful first crushes and first kisses come together by allowing a safe and positive place for them to be. Whether it is the rides, the dunk tank, the food or the freedom, it is what we all wish for,” she said.
To purchase shirts or tickets, visit the fair’s online store at hurlbutt-pto.org. The unlimited-ride bracelets are good for Saturday and Sunday evenings, 5 to 9 p.m. Last day for discounted tickets is May 12.
