4th Congressional District: Redding Republican plans to challenge incumbent

Richard “Dick” Wieland of Redding is seeking the Republican nomination for Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District.

Jerry Labriola, Jr., Connecticut Republican Party chairman, introduced Mr. Wieland at his announcement on the Redding town green.

“I pledge to be an honest broker and I am confident that once we choose a nominee and unite as a party, voters of the 4th District will return the seat to Republican hands,” Mr. Labriola said. “I have no doubt that Dick will make a terrific candidate, all three [candidates] would be a terrific alternative to the incumbent. Jim Himes has a clear record and is a close friend to President Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, but he is no friend to the taxpayers, hard-working families and financial services industry in the 4th Congressional District.”

After working in Washington D.C. for 15 years, gaining management, engineering, executive and successful entrepreneurial experience, Mr. Wieland said he is ready to help make a change in the government.

He wants to be the representative in Congress for the people and to represent what Connecticut wants and likes. He said the current congressman represents the government, instead of representing the people.

Mr. Wieland is unhappy with the current administration and how it is running the country, he said.

“I am unhappy with the inability to create jobs,” he said. “Failure to manage budget and deficit and the management of entitlement programs. I’d like to change things to the extent possible, or influence them. I don’t think the standing of the United States on an international and global basis has improved under this administration.”

While he has no prior political experience, Mr. Wieland said does have leadership experience.

“I was elected twice as chairman for Government Electronics and Information Association, served two terms as governor for the American Contract Bridge League, two terms as president of the Connecticut Bridge Association and federal budget forecast committee,” said Mr. Wieland. “As president of the bridge association, I set meeting agendas and outlined visions and policies for each organization.”

“One of my strongest qualities is my knowledge and experience on the political main roads and back roads in Washington, D.C.,” said Mr. Wieland. “I have a keen understanding of how not only top political organizations operate,” he said, adding he also has a great amount of experience in dealing with government agencies, such as Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Department of Defense and other key government agencies regulating American businesses, who are real job creators in the United States.”

Now fully retired, Mr. Wieland was an electrical engineer, worked in industry engineering, moved up to management and executive positions and started his own business, Documental Solutions, which was headquartered in Washington, D.C. and created 35 full-time jobs.

“I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have experienced, knowledgeable individuals elected to Congress who know how to get things done in Washington,” he said. “A freshman representative with little to no background in federal politics would be ineffective certainly during their first term and most likely a second term,” he said.

Creating jobs is the top item on Mr. Wieland’s platform.

His greatest concern, he said, “is getting Americans back to work. I believe this has to be done in private sectors. Adding public sector jobs is reaching limits of diminishing returns.”

Ward Mazzucco, Republican Town Committee chairman, said in a release, “Having lived for many years in Redding, Dick is well aware of the challenges that our area faces. As a successful entrepreneur, Dick knows what it takes to adhere to a budget and to make our economy grow.”

Paul Bialobrzeski, campaign manager, said “the campaign is focused on going as far as we have to to have the seat. We are prepared to do anything, whether we have to go to primary or not.”

“I am not running for Congress because I need a job or a retirement package. I simply want my children and grandchildren and yours, too, to have the same opportunity for success in this great country that I had,” Mr. Wieland said in his announcement.

Mr. Wieland is running in the primary against Chris Meek, a philanthropist and businessman from Stamford, and businessman Steve Obsitnik of Westport.
