Youth swimming: Water Rats break records

Thirty swimmers from the Westport Weston Family Y Water Rats participated in the Connecticut Long Course Age Group Championships, July 24-27, at Wesleyan

University in Middletown. Seven Water Rat records, some dating back 15 years, were broken over three days of competition, were broken by the following swimmers:

Esme Hunter (12 years old) in the 50 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter backstroke;

Nathan Wang (12 years old) in the 50 meter and 100 meter breaststroke;

Dashiell Hunter  (13 years old) in the 200 meter breaststroke;

Tucker Ballou (10 years old) in the 50 meter butterfly.

In addition to smashing team records, Wang took first place in all three breaststroke events.

The 10-and-under boys had a strong showing. Seeded third in the 200 and the 400 medley relays, the team of Sean Rogers, Ballou, Enzo Valadares and Riley Twiss exceeded expectations to become age group champions in both events, swimming past Chelsea Piers and the Greenwich Marlins.

Rogers also took home the high-point award in the distance events of the 400 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle and the 200 meter individual medley.

Coming off the long course season, the Water Rat age group team sent a record number of swimmers to represent Connecticut at the Eastern Zone Championships in Richmond, Va. Eastern Zones is the highest level of competition for Age Group swimmers and includes elite athletes from Niagara, Virginia, New Jersey, Metropolitan, Potomac Valley, Maryland, Maine, Mid Atlantic, New England, Allegheny Mountain and Adirondack LSCs.

This year’s contingent included Lily Cumello, Marissa Healy, Ballou, Esme Hunter, Dashiell Hunter, Jack Rogers, Sean Rogers, Olivia Utter and Wang.

The Water Rat Swim Team is a year-round, nationally recognized competitive swim program organized and operated by the Aquatics Department of the Westport Weston Family Y. It competes in Y competition at the local level through dual meets and at the state and national level. The team is also a registered USA Swimming Team sanctioned by Connecticut Swimming Inc. and competes in USA competitive swimming at the local, regional, state, zone and national level.

Tryouts for the 2014-2015 team will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at times to be determined. Tryouts are for swimmers 12 years and younger and cost $25 for swimmers who pre-register and $40 for those who do not. Swimmers who are 13 and older should contact head Coach Ellen Johnston to arrange a personal evaluation.
