Weston’s CAPT and CMT scores: Some are up and some are down

Weston sophomores were among the top performers on the 2011 Connecticut Academic Performance Tests (CAPT), but Weston students ranked across the board on the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMT).

For the fifth year in a row, more than 80% of Weston students scored at the goal level or above on all four CAPTs. The CAPT is given every year to all 10th grade students in the state. Students are tested in math, science, reading and writing.

In Weston, 187 students took the CAPTs and scored well above the state average on all four, with 84.5% reaching goal in math, 83.4% in science, 86.0% in reading, and 93.0% in writing.

Weston scores were up from last year in three subjects — by 0.6 percentage points in science, 1.1 in reading, and 2.4 in writing. Weston scores were down 1.6 in math.

Statewide CAPT averages were up slightly in science, reading and writing, and slightly down in math for the nearly 40,000 students who took the tests.

Fewer than half of Connecticut’s 10th graders were able to reach the goal in math (49.3%), science (47.3%), and reading (47.5%). More than half (63.1%) reached the goal in writing.

District comparisons

When compared to other school districts in Weston’s district reference group, Weston had the highest percentage of students reaching the goal on one of the four tests.

Weston belongs to DRG-A, the most affluent socioeconomic group of school districts in Connecticut, which also includes Darien, New Canaan, Region 9 (Joel Barlow High School, shared by Redding and Easton), Ridgefield, Westport and Wilton.

Weston had the highest percentage of students reaching the goal in science (83.4%). Weston was also first in the DRG last year in science with 82.8% at or above goal. Darien had the lowest percentage in science (73.1%).

Weston was fourth in the DRG in writing (93.0% reached goal). Region 9 was first in the DRG with 94.0% reaching goal, and Darien was last with 90.9%.

Weston was third in the DRG in reading, with 86.0% reaching goal. New Canaan was first in the DRG with 88.9% reaching goal. At the bottom was Darien at 75.0%.

Weston was second in the DRG in math (84.5% reached goal). Westport was first in the DRG with 85.9% reaching goal. Wilton was last at 81.7%.

CMT scores

The CMTs are standardized tests given each spring, testing all students in grades three through eight in math, reading, and writing. Fifth and eighth graders are also tested in science.

The scores released last week showed Weston ranking across the board in the DRG, with no first place rankings, four last place rankings, and numerous rankings in between.

Of the 175 Weston third graders who took the CMTs, 91.4% finished at or above goal in math — fourth highest in the DRG; 85.1% finished at or above goal in reading — fourth in the DRG; and 75.9% finished at or above goal in writing — seventh in the DRG.
