Weston’s Danielle Cass, Emily Prister and Kelsey Lemke were among 18 members of the Westport Weston Family Y exhibition gymnastics team to travel to Walt Disney World in Florida for the United States Gymnastics Federation “Gymnastics For All National Championship Challenge” July 18-22.
More than 1,500 gymnasts from all over the United States, including 22 exhibition gymnastics teams, took part.
The team competed 17th in the rotation and won the first gold medal of the evening with its five minute performance theme of “Around the World”. All 18 girls are members of the internationally recognized Family Y’s showtime exhibition gymnastics team.
The team spent six months practicing and perfecting the competition number choreographed by coaches Sally Silverstein and Lindsay Navarro.
The Westport Weston Family Y team has now met the sanctioned requirements to participate in the 2015 World Gymnaestrada to be held in Helsinki, Finland as members of the United States delegation. It is the largest gymnastics event in the world.
Additionally, the team received a special invitation from the judges at the Florida competition to represent the U.S. as the only exhibition team at the “Gym for Life World Gymnastics Challenge International Competition” in Capetown, South Africa in July 2013.
The Family Y gymnasts performed an additional two times over the weekend at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Downtown Disney on the Waterside Stage.
“We are so very proud of them,” said Silverstein. “They were so great to watch and they really had so much fun.”
