Gymnast brings home gold

Rachel Esslinger and Mary Corcoran of Weston were among more than 1,700 gymnasts representing 100 YMCAs who competed in Milwaukee for the YMCA National Gymnastics Championships earlier this month. Both competed for the Wilton Family YMCA.

At the end of competition, Esslinger found herself on the awards podium five times in the level four junior division. Her highest honors were on the bars, scoring a 9.75 for the gold medal. A score of 37.35 put her second in the all-round competition and third on the floor exercise with a score of 9.45.

Corcoran, a level nine competitor, had three days of tough competition. After arriving in the gym with a severe stomach virus, she still managed to perform the first two days. At the end of the third day of competition she earned medals on the uneven bars and the all-around.

Since the girls returned they have been back in the gym preparing for the 2012-2013 season.
