Steve Edwards, Westport Public Works director, announced on Monday, July 1, that emergency repairs to the Bayberry Lane Bridge over the Aspetuck River will close the bridge for two to four weeks beginning July 10.
Bayberry Lane in Westport becomes White Birch Lane in Weston. The road connects Lyons Plain Road in Weston to Easton Road (Rt. 136) in Westport.
Just south of White Birch Lane on Lyons Plain Road is another road that connects the main thoroughfare to Rt. 136, North Avenue. However, that road is already closed, too, because of a six-month bridge deck replacement project already underway on North Avenue in Westport.
Drivers will be routed south of North Avenue to Coleytown Road in order to get around the road closures.
Mr. Edwards said a recent routine state inspection of the Bayberry Lane bridge discovered significant structural deficiencies due to scour from recent storm events. Scour is sediment, such as sand and rocks, that swiftly moving water removes from the base of bridge abutments, eventually compromising the integrity of a structure.
Mr. Edwards said an underwater inspection of the bridge confirmed that repairs needed to be made as soon as possible.
“The bridge is not unsafe to cross, but we want to get the work done as soon as possible before schools resume in the fall,” he said in a press release issued by the Westport Selectmen’s Office.
