The Kiwanis Club of Weston has conferred its annual youth awards to six distinguished high school students.
The Kiwanis Superintendent’s Scholarship Award went to Casey Sollazzo. This award was created in 2001 in memory of Dr. Janet Shaner and her commitment to education. The award recognizes a student who intends to major in a field of education and/or enjoys working with children.
Casey, 2013 graduate of Weston High School, has donated much of her time to working with elementary age students both in Weston and Ridgefield as an after-school art teacher. She also works throughout the year with Crafts for A Cause, which raises money for children with special needs. She is interested in pursuing an art education degree at the College of New Jersey.
Clare Murray and Shawnee Sloop received the Kiwanis Community Service Award. Established in 1976, the award recognizes students for their outstanding service and leadership in the community.
Shawnee was selected as the student representative to the school’s Strategic Planning Committee and is captain of the field hockey team. She will attend the University of Delaware next year.
Claire, a rising senior at Weston High School, is the president and founder of Art with A Heart Club, an organization that helps special needs students make artwork to express their emotions, and is also a member of the Key Club.
The recipient of the David Brown Memorial Award was Devon Brostoff. This award is given to a student who has demonstrated the qualities best representative of Mr. Brown’s commitment to the Weston athletic program and spirit of sportsmanship.
Devon was a camp counselor at the well-known Sunshine Camp for children who are terminally ill and the vice president of communications for the Temple Shalom Youth Group. She will attend Lehigh University in the fall.
The 2013 Diane Mary Huston Schultz Memorial Award was presented to Olivia Clark. Olivia was selected as the student who best demonstrated the artistic qualities most representative of Ms. Schultz’s love of the arts. She is the managing editor of the high school’s literary magazine, Inlook, and has been a staff writer and section editor for The WHS Journal. Olivia will attend Williams College in the fall.
The Kiwanis Club of Weston has also conferred its Youth Service Awards. This year’s recipients are Jack Kerns and Claire Bartosic.
