Resident Tom Failla made a motion to amend the original motion to allow the town to negotiate with the property’s owners, Fairfield County Bank, to spend up to $610,000 to purchase the property instead of the $750,000 asking price.
Town officials offered preliminary estimates of about $280,000 for needed repairs and upgrades. Mr. Failla said he would like to see the town “split the difference” and ask the bank to lower its asking price by half that amount. The motion to amend the call of the meeting to allow the town to spend up to $610,000 passed 43-34.
Both votes — to amend the call and to authorize the first selectman to approve the purchase at the lower price — were taken by hand vote after voice votes were deemed by Susan Moch, the meeting moderator, to be too close to call.
Due to The Weston Forum’s press deadline, full coverage of the discussion that took place at the 90-minute meeting will be in next week’s July 3 edition of the paper.
