Baseball: Winning streak continues

FI-baseballWhat had the makings of a lopsided win eventually turned into quite a battle for the Weston High varsity baseball team when it visited Brookfield.

The Trojans had amassed a 13-run lead after five and a half innings last Monday, April 29. Such ended up being a necessary cushion as their opponent had quite a rally, scoring a dozen runs of their own in the time remaining before the Trojans held on for a 16-14 victory to keep their winning streak alive.

Weston had no trouble hitting the ball. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning it added six in its next turn and another five in the top of the third and appeared to be cruising to victory.

In the meantime pitcher Asher Lee-Tyson kept the Bobcats at bay. Throwing the first innings, he surrendered two runs in the third while striking out four, leaving the game with a 15-2 lead.

Brookfield, however, came to life in the bottom of the sixth. Besides getting a number of hits, it took advantage of a few Weston errors to score 12 runs, batting around in the process before the visitors escaped without further damage. Both sides came up empty in the seventh as Weston got the win.

Charlie Ameer had a big day with the bat, going four for four with a double, scoring four runs and driving in five. Helping his cause offensively, Asher Lee-Tyson had four hits (including a double and a triple), drove in three runs and scored three as well.

Justin Resnick had two hits (triple) scored two runs and had two RBI. Tyler Hassett had two hits (triple) with three RBI.

Scoring was a bit more subdued when the Trojans visited Notre Dame of Fairfield two days later. Once again they had good pitching but with tighter defense in a 6-1 win.

After Weston scored a run it the third it remained a 1-0 affair until the fifth when each side scored one. The Trojans added some insurance in the seventh with four runs.

Ameer pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and two walks while striking out 16.

He also drove in two runs, as did Greg Kaeser. Resnick and Asher Lee-Tyson each had two hits, the former also scoring two runs.

Weston had to play catch-up the next day when it hosted Oxford. Down six runs after one and a half innings, it chipped away at the lead in time for a 9-8 win, its ninth straight.

Although the Trojans scored first for a 1-0 lead in the first the Wolverines tacked on seven in the second. The hosts drew closer in their next turn with three and scored at least one in the next three frames two take the lead. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth and seventh.

Relief pitcher August Ratté got the win, throwing three and two thirds innings, giving up one hit while fanning three.

Resnick went three for three for Weston with an RBI and a run scored. Jared Weisman had two hits and drove in a run. Asher Lee-Tyson and Ethan Lee-Tyson scored two runs apiece.

Now 12-2, Weston is at New Fairfield today (Thursday), goes to Joel Barlow on Monday and is home against New Fairfield on Tuesday. All games are at 4 p.m.
