A much-improved opponent awaited the Weston High girls tennis team when it faced Lauralton Hall last week.

The Trojans, who defeated the same team 4-3 in the season-opener, were in for a tough time on Monday, April 22. They took just a pair of contests  in a 5-2 loss at Eisenhower Park in Milford.

Both victories were at singles. One went to Kimmy Guerin in the No. 1 spot. Remaining undefeated, she swept Mary Kate Fornshell 6-0, 6-0.

Weston’s other win was at third singles. Andi Rosenblatt posted 6-2, 6-4 scores over Tara Boyd.

It was the hardest week of the season to date for Weston, which hosted Joel Barlow last Wednesday. The match could have gone either way but Barlow held on for a 4-3 win.

The Trojans were tough at singles, winning three of the four contests. Guerin just missed a shutout, beating Paige Twombly 6-1, 6-0.

Sarah Greisman was at third singles and survived a close second set for a 6-1, 7-5 win over Olivia Massey. Also getting a win, Kristen Rivera defeated Grace Lamb 6-2, 6-3.

The match came down to second doubles. Although Bari Blitzer and Abbey Roth won the opening set Sarah McCain and Maddy Frierson came back to win the next and force a third in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

The week was not a total loss for Weston, however, which visited Bethel on Thursday. It nearly swept the competition before winning 6-1.

Guerin got the sweep at first singles with 6-0, 6-0 scores over Sara Islam. Greisman moved up to second singles and defeated Jessica Bergen 6-3, 6-1.

Rosenblatt posted 6-3, 6-3 scores against Rachel Belcher and Rivera won a close 7-6, 6-4 decision from Aiden Ford.

Bethel’s only win was at first doubles. Although McKenzie Murray and Eugenie Portner won the first set Daniella Wong and Carina Leggio came back for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0 tiebreaker) win.

Blitzer and Julia Weisman teamed up for second doubles and swept Casey Conway and Kasey Burke 6-0, 6-0. Third doubles also went to Weston with Alexandra Brostoff and Ava Pucci beating Emma Crouse and Lori Robertson 6-4, 6-4.

Weston, now 7-3 overall, is at Pomperaug on Monday at 4:15 p.m. and goes to Stratford on Wednesday at 3:45.
